Ventilation Solution For Existing Homes

Existing Houses

We have solutions for existing homes which have different ventilation requirements. From replacement fans to whole house ventilation systems. We are here to give you advice on any of our ventilation products. Installing the correct fan with the correct ducting and grille in the right location makes a massive difference in the performance of the fan. There are many fans on the market all with different qualities but on less you understand the power curve of the fan and the resistance of the ducting you may well be wasting your money.

When choosing a fan you need to decide if it is just one room that you need to ventilate or are you having problems in other parts of your home. If you are having problems in other parts of your home and you just want to buy one fan today then you should consider buying a fan that will be part of a system.

When purchasing a fan you should consider the location where you are going to install a fan and the affect the fan might have on other appliances. These appliances include open flue gas boilers and stoves. The rules with fitting ventilation in kitchens with a stove is very strict. When installing a fan in a bathroom you have to be aware of which zone you are installing the fan in and the electrical regulations regarding which fan you can install.

If you are just replacing a fan which goes straight through the wall you may find that it is mainly the grille that is causing the problem. When a fan is installed in the ceiling and the ducting used is flexible ducting in the attic space, this can have a very negative affect on the fans extraction rate. If the ducting is not insulated, then condensation can drip back down the pipe and completely block the ducting. How the ducting exits the attic space is usually a problem. If a tile vent is used it may not be suitable for extractor fans and if the vent is installed to high without insulation condensation will run back down the pipe. If the ducting is installed through the soffit board from the attic space all to often the gap between the roofing felt and wall plate is less than 75mm, many installers will just squash the 100mm flexible ducting through this space further reducing the flow rate of the fan. Most ordinary bathroom extractor fans can only deal with 1.5 meters of flexible ducting.

For homes suffering from mould and condensation problems we recommend ordering our Thermal Imaging and Damp survey. We offer a complete supply and fit service. But we are also here to give advice about which fan and ventilation system to install. If you decide to purchase the product online we are available to give you advice over the phone on any problem you may have fitting the product.

With existing homes which have an attic space we recommend installing PIV ventilation with constant running fans were required. These fans supply fresh air into the home in a central location such as a hallway or landing space while never letting the air go below 10 degrees. If you have a bungalow we have PIV units that can heat the air to up to 16 degrees. These units can be fitted into apartments with no attic space but be aware of the fire regulations.

For houses that are unsuitable for PIV ventilation we would recommend dMEV ventilation. A dMEV ventilation system is made up of individual constant running fans. Theses fans are installed in the wet areas such as bathrooms and the kitchen. They run at a low rate to give back round ventilation and will increase in speed when the humidity level rises. The fans are silent and cost around €2 each per year to run.
